Eight to the Bar
June 25, 2013
Listening to Eight to the Bar is a lot like driving along a time-warped highway precisely halfway between Count Basie's Kansas City and Fats Waller's Harlem, where the car radio picks up everything from Jumpin’ at the Woodside to the Andrews Sisters. Their material, like their outlandish wardrobes and onstage choreo, is a colorful mix of forties jazz and swing, fifties jump blues, some Motown, and their own swing-influenced tunes. With their female vocals, saxophone, guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, this unique sextet pack a musical and visual wallop not seen in New England since the group's inception in 1975. Since that time they have released eleven CDs, seven videos, have appeared nationally on HBO, VH-1, and have excited audiences from Europe to the Caribbean. At this time the band has toured Europe 3 times, has released its 11th CD, The Romper Room, and has been named “Best Live Band 2010” by Hartford Magazine, and “Best Band 2008” by Connecticut Magazine. Currently the group has returned from a weeklong tour of the Republic of Georgia where they performed at the invitation of the U.S. Embassy there.
KICK
July 9, 2013
KICK has quickly earned a reputation as “easily the top show band in New England…live, they actually look, perform, and sound better than a lot of the original artists” (Music News Express) and “the most professional modern rock cover band I’ve ever seen. Masterful.” (Hartford Advocate). In national auditions, MTV Cover Wars called KICK “Perfect” and VH1 concurred they are “an outstanding band.” Regional editions of Life magazine called them “Awesome” and ”relentlessly entertaining,” and they’ve amassed countless consecutive nominations and multiple victories as Best Cover Band and Readers Choice in the Grand Band Slam Poll Awards and Snow Slam competitions.
A sampling of songs includes; Boys of Summer, Anyway You Want It, Jessie's Girl, End of the World As We Know It and more!!
The Bernadettes
July 16, 2013
Those who have seen the band perform live in their latest incarnation might be surprised to know that the Bernadettes started out in the early 1990s as a traditional-style blues band, covering songs by the likes of John Lee Hooker, Howlin Wolf, as well as later bluesmen like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton. But the band soon began experimenting with their own unique versions of R&B classics from James Brown, Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye and their contemporaries. This evolved further with the addition of classic Motown hits, contemporary funk, soul, and R&B flavored rock songs to their large and varied, dance-oriented song list. The resulting mix has become the staple of the band's offering to live audiences. Continuous appearances at a variety of venues have established the Bernadettes as one of the area's premier live acts. They were voted the best rhythm and blues band in the New Haven Advocate "Sounds of New Haven" 1996 readers poll, and also chosen by that paper as New Haven's #1 bar band. A constantly growing songlist, matched with the band's frenetic brand of soul, make for a memorable evening for anyone who wants to move their feet and dance to the beat.
